Gold Coast Coin Club Meeting, Thursday October 6, 2011
The room at the Hollywood Beach Civic Center began to fill up as early as 5:00 PM. Lots of good talk about coins and buying and selling were already taking place by the time I arrived at 5:40 PM.
Many thanks to Bill Tallant, Selma Sanders and Louis Kleinman who provided refreshments.
Lou Kleinman delivered about 20 copies of the Fort Lauderdale Banquet Form to me at about 6:00 PM. I in turn, gave him a corrected copy of that form in the event that he might need to make additional copies. Almost immediately, people who were members of both the Gold Coast and the Fort Lauderdale clubs began making inquiries about the Fort Lauderdale banquet. By the end of the meeting, I had collected monies for nine reservations.
At 6:30 PM, Bill Sanders began the video presentation on the coinage of The Confederate States of America. About 12 people attended this interesting presentation by the treasurer of the Palm Beach Coin Club-Robert Leneve who gave the recorded video presentation at the 2007 FUN Convention. Among the items Included were original ½ dollar coins struck by the Confederacy at the New Orleans mint and identified by the die breaks from the rim through the head of Liberty and the date. In addition, fantasy pieces which took the form of Storecards and Patterns in silver, gold, copper and Aluminum were discussed and illustrated. All the participants agreed it was a very informative and enjoyable hour.
The regular meeting started a bit later than the usual 7:30 PM starting time. For some inexplicable reason, the Pledge of Allegiance was omitted. This is the first time in the13 years that I have been a member of the club that this has occurred. Pizza was served for the dinner break.
After dinner, the meeting resumed. A guest, Jim Pappas introduced himself and indicated that he collected Indian Head Cents and other old US coins.
Stan Klein gave a presentation about the volatility of the gold and silver markets and how the major dealers are hedged against losses in the event that the price goes against their positions. He indicated that small dealers must make at least 2-4 % on their purchases almost immediately, especially during purchases at Sunday shows as there is no active price quote available.
Roger Lane indicated that the last Hollywood show was very successful despite a dealer no show. Dealer Keith Brown was ill but Roger was able to sell Keith’s tables to dealer Darren Frankel. Except for the no show, the show was a sellout.
Roger also discussed his “million dollar note” and his “2001 Bush dollar” along with a numismatically related drinking glass gilded with two gold coins.
I then took the floor and mentioned that I would be taking reservations for the Fort Lauderdale Club Banquet. I also indicated the current list of candidates who are running for officers and board members of the Gold Coast Club. They are as follows:
1. President- Bill Tallant
2. First Vice President- Lou Kleinman
3. Second Vice President- Harry Schwartz
4. Secretary- Herb Clauson
5. Treasurer- Bill Sanders
6. Board members-Mike Pearl, Mark Kaplan, Ed Napoli, Stan Klein, Steve Schor, Roger Lane, Harvey Bastacky, Steve Rubinstein, Mark Eshleman.
The meeting ended at about 8:40 PM. The Board meeting commenced a few minutes thereafter. At the meeting the board discussed the choices for the club banquet. After much discussion the board settled on the following entrees, side dishes and dessert:
Entrees
Prime Rib
Salmon
Chicken Francaise
Sides
Vegetable Medley
Little Roasted Potatoes
Dessert
Strawberry Chocolate Mousse Cake
The Board meeting ended at 9:00 PM.
Faithfully submitted,
Steve Schor
